Neon is rooted in the Greek word neos, which means "the new." Like the god Shiva, she is the change agent, presiding over creation and destruction in equal measure. As amoral or as supra-moral as a volcanic eruption, she gleefully re-surfaces the planet, bringing fresh elements from the depths to nourish new life – and in the process, obliterating existing life. The emission spectrum of neon gas is a pronounced red-orange, a shade made famous in neon signs. But having ceded most of this mundane task to her sister Krypton, her legend overshadows her daily reality, and her cataclysmic lava burns everlastingly bright in human fears.
